How to choose the right keywords for website promotion and traffic growth.
Keyword selection for website optimization
An effective keyword query is a query for which you can provide users with information. In other words, a query that is relevant to the information on your website. The concepts of a keyword query and site optimization are inseparable.
An ideal search query should be popular and have low competition. You can assess competition by entering your query into the Yandex or Google search box and evaluating which sites are fighting for the top positions for that query.
Query popularity can be analyzed using the search engines' own services. In addition, these services allow you to view statistics for related queries and identify new keywords. The services show the number of queries for a keyword per month. This does not guarantee that you will receive that number of visitors per month to your site. It only shows how many people viewed the first page of search results for that query in a month.
In Rambler's statistics you can see both the aggregate result for a keyword phrase and the number of queries for the exact word form. Rambler's statistics are the only ones that show how many times the word was requested in its exact form.
Yandex's statistics display only the aggregate result for queries of a keyword phrase. In addition, Yandex shows associations — what people searched for who searched for your keyword.
Competition is assessed by entering your keyword into the search box. The more homepages (and not site sections) among the top ten results, the higher the query's competitiveness. This is because the most popular keywords you select are better to optimize for homepages.
Besides the number of homepages, you should consider site quality, site relevance and links to the site. If the sites on the first page meet these qualities, the query is competitive.
From the search results list you can also estimate the number of pages a site has. Yandex also has its own site catalog where it includes only quality sites. This information is also displayed under the listed site.
Using the keyword in the site name adds additional competitiveness to the query. The first thing a webmaster does when optimizing a page is add the keyword to the title.
Relevance is indicated by the presence of the keyword in the title or in a short text. If the keyword is absent there, the query has low competitiveness.
The number of links to a site can be analyzed as follows. Sites have metrics such as TIC (Yandex Citation Index) and PR (Google PageRank). These metrics indirectly indicate the number and quality of links to a site. Low values are considered PR = 2 or below, TIC = 50 or below.
