Pjeta. Grieving Mother of God. Ancestors of Christ. Stained-glass windows in the Blessed Virgin temple. Vladivostok
“Pietà. The Sorrowful Mother of God. Ancestors of Christ” is a cycle of stained-glass windows created for the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos in Vladivostok. The compositions are placed within Gothic window openings, emphasizing the sacred verticality and the upward striving of the images toward heaven.
On the left is the scene of the Pietà — Mary sorrowfully holding the body of Christ. Below is the symbol of the flaming heart pierced with arrows — a sign of the Virgin’s suffering. On the right, within a full stained-glass window, are depicted the figures of the Ancestors of Christ, interpreted in the tradition of Western Christian iconography.
The color scheme is based on the combination of golden-yellow and deep blue tones, symbolizing the light of Divine Wisdom and the celestial principle. The contour lines are clear and graphic, characteristic of stained-glass art, which allows the decorative and the expressive aspects of religious content to be united.
