Chekhov in Sakhalin
“Chekhov on Sakhalin” is a historical-genre painting dedicated to one of the most important episodes in the life of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. In 1890, the writer traveled to Sakhalin to study the lives of convicts and exiles, resulting in his book “The Sakhalin Island.” The canvas depicts the moment of Chekhov’s encounter with prisoners: his figure stands out as a bright spot against the dark mass of people. The combination of strict documentary accuracy and emotional expressiveness underscores Chekhov’s humanistic mission and his attention to the “humiliated and insulted.”
