Mushroom Season in Brest Region: How to Prepare for a Forest Trip

A safe mushroom trip starts with checking access, planning a clear route and agreeing when you will return.

An autumn forest can feel familiar even when you visit only a few times a year. Yet a mushroom picker looks down, changes direction constantly and soon loses sight of the road. Safety is therefore decided before entering the forest: whether the district is open, who knows your plan and what remains useful if the phone loses signal.

Check whether the forest is open

Restrictions and bans are introduced district by district according to fire risk and may change within a day. Before leaving, open the Forestry Ministry's interactive map, find the relevant district of Brest Region and read the current status.

A restriction is not always a complete ban: local rules may allow walking while prohibiting vehicles or fires. Protected areas and the border zone have additional rules that still apply when an ordinary forest is open.

Five checks before departure

  • The district is open to visitors today.
  • The forecast does not show a thunderstorm, strong wind, fog or a sharp drop in temperature.
  • Your phone is charged and an offline map of the area has been downloaded.
  • Someone knows your entry point, direction and check-in time.
  • You plan to return before dark with at least one hour to spare.

What to carry even for two hours

Pack a charged phone, power bank and cable, water, a simple snack, whistle, torch, lighter in a waterproof bag, essential medicines and a bright rain jacket. Wear visible clothing that covers arms and legs, waterproof footwear with good grip and tick repellent used according to its label. Camouflage is a poor choice for a person who may need to be found.

How to keep your direction

  1. Mark the entry point on the map and photograph a clear landmark such as a road junction, numbered forest compartment or wide clearing.
  2. Begin in one understandable direction instead of circling around the parking place.
  3. Check your location and the time regularly, not only the battery level.
  4. Do not cross a broad ditch, river, railway or major clearing unless you know how you will cross it again.
  5. Turn back according to time, even when the basket is not full.

Pick mushrooms safely

Take only species you know with confidence. A phone photograph or advice from a random chat cannot replace expert identification. Leave old, waterlogged, damaged and unknown specimens, as well as mushrooms growing beside busy roads, industrial sites or dumps.

Use a rigid ventilated basket rather than a closed plastic bag. Sort the harvest by species and process it the same day. Never mix a doubtful specimen with the rest for later identification. Belarusian public-health guidance recommends that children should not eat wild mushrooms.

If you realise you are lost

  1. Stop. Fast movement in a guessed direction only enlarges the search area.
  2. Call 112. Give your name, district, entry point and time, known landmarks, health condition, battery level and group size.
  3. Send your location if possible, then save power by dimming the screen and closing unused apps.
  4. Stay where you are unless rescuers tell you otherwise. Signal with repeated whistle blasts and answer voices or machinery.
  5. Before dark, choose a dry visible place nearby and protect yourself from wind and rain. Do not attempt marshes, ditches or fallen timber at night.

After returning

  • Tell your contact that you are out of the forest so an unnecessary search is not started.
  • Check clothing, skin, children and pets for ticks.
  • Sort the mushrooms again in good light and discard anything doubtful.
  • If nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, weakness or visual changes follow a mushroom meal, call emergency medical help on 103 or 112 immediately. Keep meal remains for medical staff.

The certainty rule

If you cannot name a mushroom without help and explain how it differs from dangerous lookalikes, it belongs neither in the basket nor in the kitchen.
