What to See in September in Brest Region
Five seasonal events that work only now - a month from here, half of them are over until next year.
September is conveniently arranged here: summer formats still run, autumn ones have already begun, and the tourist crowds have gone. Below is what is worth leaving the house for this month rather than postponing to October.
The red deer rut in Belovezhskaya Pushcha
The natural event of the month. In the second half of September the red deer rut begins and the roaring of stags carries across open ground at dawn and dusk. It is a rare case where you may not see the animal but hear it hundreds of metres away - and people travel here for that sound alone.
Watching is organised by the national park administration along set routes with a guide. Leaving the trails to approach rutting grounds is prohibited, and this is not a formality: during the rut large stags behave unpredictably.
Autumn bird migration over Polesie
From late August through September autumn migration passes over the Polesie marshes. The region's reserves are among the key stopover points on this European flyway, and in September the open water and wet meadows hold concentrations seen at no other time of year.
Little equipment is needed: binoculars, rubber boots and patience. Early morning is best. Many reserves have marked trails and observation towers, but access should be agreed with the administration - some areas have restricted visiting regimes.
The theatre season opens
In September the region's theatres return from the summer break and open a new season. It is the best month to buy a subscription or catch a premiere: the repertoire is still being built and halls are not yet as full as in December.
Parks at their peak
In the second half of September the region's old parks reach their best: around the palace complexes and city gardens there are two or three weeks when the leaves have turned but still hold. After that the first serious wind decides everything.
Water without the summer crowds
The swimming season is over, but the lakeside recreation areas still operate and in September they gain their own advantage: quiet, free gazebos and reasonable prices. For a walk, a barbecue or a weekend stay it is close to the best month of the year.

Plan for the morning
Both the deer rut and bird watching happen at dawn. A trip starting after midday usually ends as a pleasant walk without the main event.
