Where to properly install a child car seat — safety tips.

Where to Install a Child Car Seat

Naturally, we strive to seat our child as safely as possible. It is believed that the safest place is the rear seat behind the driver, because in a collision the driver instinctively tries to protect themselves and is least affected. There is also the view that the safest place is the seat behind the front passenger. But neither version has sufficient grounds. Certain studies have been conducted which indicate with confidence that the safest place in a car is the rear seat.

Those findings showed that the safest position in the rear is the middle seat. The studies took into account factors such as vehicle type, the use of certain accessories, airbags, the vehicle's weight, and the driver's age; moreover, even environmental conditions were included in the calculations. Child car seats are very similar to baby strollers. Using all of the above data made it possible to conclude that the rear middle seat is the safest place in a car.

The rear middle seat achieves this higher level of safety because using that position avoids certain compression forces and leaves the necessary space. If the child sits at the side, there is a chance that in a collision they may suffer significant injury from compression.

It should also be remembered that in accidents one of the most common impacts is the side impact, which is slightly less common than frontal impacts. It should be noted, however, that in many car models the rear middle seat is quite uncomfortable for installing a child seat. As a rule, in C-segment cars there is a built-in armrest at that position. But there are car makes in which the rear has three comfortable seats, so a child seat can be installed fairly comfortably in the middle seat. If you have the option, the child car seat should be secured in the rear middle seat if the car is a five-seater, or in the middle seat of the middle row if the car is a seven-seater.
