Dream Theater's legacy — influence on the world of progressive metal.
Dream Theater and Its Legacy
The entire world of contemporary rock music cannot offer any musical group that plays heavy rock and has never been compared to the legendary band Dream Theater.
The emblem of the rock music world — a five-piece called "Dream Theater" — exerts such a powerful influence on the heavy rock scene as a whole that newly formed bands working in this musical direction measure themselves against the skill of these world-famous rockers from the very beginning.
Dream Theater began its legendary march up the rock charts in 1985. The original lineup included the following musicians: John Myung, guitarist John Petrucci, drummer Mike Portnoy, keyboardist Kevin Moore and Chris Collins.
However, this heavy rock band was not originally formed under the name Dream Theater. The group's first name was Majesty. Along with the band arose a direction unique for that era in the music world — progressive rock.
The new masterpieces of these rock musicians were often compared to the early work of the band Rush.
The band's current name, Dream Theater, was adopted at the suggestion of Mike Portnoy's father. He proposed naming the band after an old movie theater in Monterey, California. The musicians liked the idea, and the band began to be called Dream Theater.
Following the name change, the group's vocalist also changed. Charlie Dominici replaced Chris Collins in Dream Theater. This vocalist, like his predecessor, did not entirely satisfy all the band members. However, there was no other option at the time.
In 1989 the world saw Dream Theater's debut album "When Dream & Day Unite". That release made a significant impact on the heavy rock scene.
In 1992, after two years of operating without a stable vocalist, Kevin James LaBrie joined Dream Theater in place of Charlie Dominici. After the release of their second album, "Images & Words", the band embarked on a world tour.
To this day Dream Theater and their music continue to amaze the band's fan club and music fans from around the world. While recording new albums, Dream Theater also take part in creating tributes and are valued guests at various projects.
