LED or traditional bulbs? Comparison and lighting tips.

Lighting Devices, Bulbs, and LED Lighting

Modern living conditions and human activity are hard to imagine without light, meaning electric lighting. However, today it is very difficult to define the optimal lighting parameters that would make our lives most comfortable. For example, many people wear glasses since childhood, and few know that improper lighting is one of the causes.

Experts evaluating the quality of various light sources analyze characteristics such as light flux, intensity, brightness, luminous efficacy, and other factors. This is necessary to calculate the recommended use conditions for different lighting devices. For instance, a room may visually seem well-lit, but the choice of bulbs may be incorrect. You enter a room from a darker space and feel it’s dim, but this is a temporary illusion—lighting was chosen correctly. The reason lies in individual perception of light.

Lighting devices serve many purposes, but their main function is illuminating rooms, objects, and open areas. As a secondary purpose, they are often used for interior and exterior design decoration.

Lighting devices are classified by purpose, mounting method, and specific characteristics. There are fixtures for general and local lighting. Standard fixtures illuminate entire surfaces, while local ones highlight specific parts of rooms or objects (walls, paintings, etc.). By protection level, they are divided into closed (sealed, waterproof) and open types. Mounting methods include ceiling, pendant, wall-mounted, built-in, and others.

The main component of any lighting device is the bulb. Bulbs are the actual light sources. They can be regular, transparent, frosted, fluorescent, phosphor-coated, etc. Standard bulbs contain a filament inside the glass bulb, which glows when electric current is applied. Fluorescent bulbs have no filament; light is produced by glowing gas inside the tube.

Today, there is an excellent alternative to traditional light sources—LED lighting. An LED is a semiconductor that emits light when electricity passes through it. This lighting type is not only energy-efficient and durable, but also safer for human health.

LED lighting is gaining popularity due to these and many other technological advantages. Especially popular are so-called white LEDs—a hybrid of LED and fluorescent lighting. LED lighting is widely used: from advertising signs, displays, and nameplates to interior and architectural design elements.
