The French Riviera: glamorous resorts, luxury, and a Mediterranean vibe.
France and the Famous French Riviera – Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Monaco
The town of Saint-Tropez is known for its picturesque landscapes and an extraordinary concentration of high society. Located just 90 kilometers from Nice, it is home to some of France's most prestigious and luxurious resorts. Visitors enjoy pristine air, gentle sea, and white sandy beaches. The history of Saint-Tropez dates back to ancient times. The town was named after Saint Torpes, who was executed by Nero for practicing Christianity. Legend says his body washed ashore in a boat, where he was buried.
Saint-Tropez gained fame in 1637 when its fleet of four ships defeated twenty Spanish warships. This victory is still celebrated every year on July 15. The festive procession called "La Bravade" parades through the streets with music, delighting locals and tourists alike.
Until the late 19th century, Saint-Tropez was an unremarkable fishing and winemaking village. But in 1892, the famous painter Paul Signac arrived here. He later invited other masters such as Matisse, Bonnard, and more. In 1950, the film "And God Created Woman" starring Brigitte Bardot was shot here, bringing worldwide fame to both the actress and the town, which became a popular resort destination.
When we think of Saint-Tropez, an image immediately comes to mind: a lively harbor, rows of white yachts, beautiful seaside houses in Provençal style, pine trees, and stunning sandy beaches. This region ensures the best hospitality — from luxury hotels and restaurants to stylish bars. Many world celebrities have purchased charming villas along the shore.
The town’s promenade is among its most visited places. Here, artists exhibit their paintings in the open air. Bright sun, sea breeze, white stones, and vibrant artworks make for a delightful experience. France is famous for its shopping, and Saint-Tropez is no exception, with boutique shops and artisanal workshops.
Begin your tour of the town in the Ponche quarter, then make your way up to the Citadel with its hexagonal tower built in the 16th century. The panoramic view from the top is breathtaking. You can also visit the Maritime Museum located within the citadel. The Chapel of the Annunciation houses another museum — the Gramont Collection, featuring works by Matisse, Bonnard, and Picabia.
Saint-Tropez is also home to the unique Butterfly House, with a collection of 20,000 specimens — one of the largest in Europe. In the suburbs of Saint-Tropez, there are several charming villages worth visiting.
To make your holiday in France truly complete, take an excursion to Nice, Cannes, and the Principality of Monaco, all located nearby. Then you’ll be able to say you’ve fully experienced the wonders of the French Riviera.
