Why drainage fails without outflow: wells, pumps, and landscape considerations.

The outlet as a necessary element of a drainage system

Suppose you have a drainage system but it has no outlet. In that case, its efficiency will be zero. For the installation to work properly you must carefully consider where the water will go. In some cases the convenient location of the house allows you to direct water into a roadside ditch or the nearest body of water. But not every house stands near a lake or a river, and a cottage settlement without a drainage system is not very comfortable!

An ideal solution is to construct a drainage well near your house. The general layout of a drainage well looks roughly like this: a pit one meter in diameter and two meters deep. The inside of this pit is lined with bricks or concrete rings. For better drainage, the gaps between the bricks are left unfilled with cement. To prevent silting, the well can be packed with crushed stones and then covered with turf. However, if your budget allows, you can purchase a ready-made well that only needs to be buried and will perform all the necessary functions.

As an alternative — instead of a well, equip a small pond to collect water and use it for technical needs. From an aesthetic point of view it looks nice as well — many cottages in the Moscow region are equipped this way. To ensure the best drainage of such a pond, it is necessary to install a pump of the Grundfos AP12 type. This model, made of stainless steel, is undemanding and durable. Also, this pump is capable of pumping very dirty water with solid particles almost a centimeter in size. You should not skimp on the pump, since this is a purchase made for many years (if the pump is of good quality). Good drainage pumps can work for ten years and require minimal maintenance. They are very easy to operate and have simple, reliable automation. Moreover, the pump will provide you with water for garden irrigation and help control the groundwater level.

If you say that you can survive without drainage, we would agree — but that applies only to a desert; a cottage settlement in the Moscow region faces different natural conditions: winters with a meter of snow, rains every week, spring floods. It is precisely to control water that a drainage system is needed.

By the way, in all developed European countries you cannot obtain a building permit until you present a detailed drainage system plan. If you care about the fate of your plot, you simply need a proper drainage system.
