Brest region – “western gate” of the country – is situated in the centre of Europe at the south – west of Belarus. Its area is 32, 8 thousands km2. The region stretches for 300 km. from the west to the east and for 116 km. from the north to the south. Brest region borders upon Homel, Minsk and Grodno regions of the Republic of Belarus, upon the Ukraine at the south, upon Poland at the west. Regional centre is the city of Brest. The distance from Brest to the capital of the Republic of Belarus, Minsk, is 360 km, to the capital of the Russian Federation, Moscow, - 1060 km., to the capital of the Ukraine, Kiev, about 800 km, to the capital of the Republic of Poland, Warsaw, - about 300 km

Up – to – date Brest region consists of 16 districts, numbers 4 towns of regional subordination, 16 settlements of the town type, more than 2 thousands of places of population. The region population size is more than one and a half million of people.

Brest region has favourable natural conditions for the development of all spheres of human life activities. The region climate is moderate continental, transitional to maritime.

The region is sufficiently rich in natural resources. There is the largest granite deposit, which is used for the production of construction crushed aggregate (Mikashevichi).The unique clay deposits are situated in Stolin region, the largest in Belarus chalk deposit “Hotislavskoe” is located in Malorita region. Glass – making and molding sands, common salt are met every where, large reserves of mineral waters have been revealed.

Industrial complex of Brest region is presented by more than 300 industrial enterprises, which manufacture products at the amount of more than 3 milliards of dollars, and at the same time more than 2 / 3 of it is manufactured in the non – governmental sector.
Nowadays the region produces up to 9 % of republican volumes of industrial manufacture production and up to 19 % of consumer goods, the output of which stably and dynamically increases every year.
In the whole volume of the industrial production food industry (up to 37 %), machine engineering and metal working (up to 20 %), woodworking industry (up to 12 %), electrical power engineering (up to 9 %) have the largest specific weight. The significant segment in the manufacture structure is occupied by light industry and construction materials industry (share of which is more than 6 %).

Large producers of the region are JE OJSC “Brestgazoapparat”, OJSC “Brest electric bulbs factory”, LLC “Pinskdrev”, Baranovichi machine – tool factory, LLC “Atlant”, Zhabinka sugar – refinery, RUPP “Baranovichi manufacture – cotton association”, OJSC “Pinsk manufacture – trade association “Polesye”, OJSC “Brest Stocking Mill”.
Considerable contribution to the region and republic economics is brought by the created for the recent years enterprises: Byelorussian – German JE “Santa Impex Brest” ad its leading enterprise JE “Santa Bremor” LLC, CHUMP “Kompo”, JE “PP “Polesye” LLC, CC “Involux”, IP “Inkofud”, private enterprise “Construction equipment and materials”, CHUPP “Furniture factory “Laguna”.

Brest region traditionally has the agrarian specialization with the prevalence of large commodity manufacture. 2 / 3 of meat and more than 70 % of milk are produced in agricultural organizations.
Agricultural enterprises of Brest region have high development potential of meat and milk livestock farming, potato growing, they are engaged in growing of vegetables, sugar beet, flax. Practically 1 / 5 of the republican volumes of meat, milk and potato is provided by Brest region.

The availability of direct boarder of Brest region with European Union favours active development of business relations with foreign countries. Trilateral relations of the adjoining regions develop effectively: Brest region, Volhynia region (Ukraine), Lyublin province (Poland) in the frames of Euroregion “Bug”, activity of which contributes to mutually beneficial economic relations.
About 700 management subjects of all property forms in the region effect export – import operations with partners from more than 120 countries of the world. The main foreign trade partners of the region are Russia, Germany, Poland, the Ukraine, Italy.
For last 5 years foreign – trade turnover has increased in 2, 4 times and as to the results of 2007 it has made up almost 2, 5 milliards of USA dollars at trade surplus.

In Brest for rendering services, assisting to the fulfillment of facing Byelorussian Chamber of Commerce and Industry purposes and problems on development of the Republic of Belarus economics, its integration into the world economic system, formation of market infrastructure UE “Brest Branch of Byelorussian Chamber of Commerce and Industry” functions.

The enterprise is called upon to contribute to the creation of the favourable conditions for entrepreneur activity, development of trade and economic relations of Byelorussian legal persons and individual entrepreneurs with foreign partners.
The activity of Brest Branch of Byelorussian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is many – sided and has its own specifics. The enterprise renders services in the field of foreign trade activity (consultation on various problems, search of foreign partners for business cooperation, organization and holding of exhibitions, fairs, Days of Economics at the territory of Belarus and abroad), services in the sphere of certification, examination and evaluation, effects marketing researches and etc.

Free economic zone “Brest” plays the important role in the region economics, this zone is the most profitable sphere for investments. The range of tax and customs concessions, determined for enterprises – residents of free economic zone, presents considerable interest for business circles.
At present there are 73 residents in FEZ “Brest”, including 55 with the participation of foreign capital. The enterprises of 20 countries of the world are presented here.
The fact, that more than 450 millions of USA dollars are attracted by them, speaks about high investment activity of residents.
Nowadays the enterprises – residents produce more then 16 % of volumes of region industrial production and provide the fourth share of export.

Trade develops at fast rate. At present trade branch of Brest region is one of key stably developing branches of the region economy. Trade enterprises of the region provide the fifth part of the commodity turnover of the Republic.
For last 3 years retail turnover has increased for more than 1 million of USA dollars, branch profit has increased more than 3 times, that in no small way is achieved due to the favourable economic and investment situation, arose in the region and first of all due to the growth of population real income.

Stable and profitable work of the regional economics gives the possibility to finance social programmes. New medical  institutions are put into service; they are equipped with modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. Special attention is given to the development of public health in rural areas.

Brest region is characterized by high level of education infrastructure. 4 institutions of higher education, about 50 vocational technical training and specialized secondary education institutions function in the region; they provide preparation of highly skilled specialists practically for all economy branches.
There are 16 research, planning, design and survey organizations. Region science potential mainly goes by applied research, which allows preparation of highly skilled labour force.

In the region all conditions for physical training and sports taking up are created – many sports institution are functioning. 16 sports structures of the region are the main bases of preparation of national and combined team of the Republic of Belarus.

Situated at the crossroads of ways, connecting the West with the East, Brest region is perspective for the development of such kinds of tourism as transit, frontier, ethnographic and ecological ones. Rich natural potential of Brest region allows organizing of interesting tourist routes.

At the north – west of the region the unique nature monument spreads – State National Park “Belovezhskaya Puscha”, which has received the status of biosphere reserve and diploma of Europe Council, and also it was included in the list of world heritage.

There are about 120 antique parks and estates, 2084 monuments of history and architecture at Brest land. Brest symbol – legendary Brest Fortress – is the example of art of fortification of the XIX century, which became the model of staunchness and soldier courage later on. The most famous architectural monuments are Bratskaya and Simeonovskaya churches, Cathedral Krestovozdvizhensky kostel in Brest, Pokrovsky cathedral in Baranovichi, Jesuitical Collegium, Minorite abbey in Pinsk, Kamenetskaya tower, built in the XII century in Kamenets. The archeological museum in Brest is also of interest, here ancient structures of the X – XI centuries are preserved. There are many memorable places at Brest land, connected with the names of Adam Mitskevich, Napoleon Orda, Kazimir Lyschinski, Tadeush Kostyushko and others.
